MLB Bet Types

In terms of baseball betting, there is no lack of betting options for those that like to wager on America’s pastime. Here are the MLB betting options, including MLB bet types, available at MLB betting sites.

  • Moneyline

Baseball betting is unlike football or basketball betting, as there is no point spread used. The most popular MLB betting option is the moneyline, which is a bet that you are simply picking the winner in a game with inflated odds showing the favorite and the underdog.

Here is an example of a moneyline bet.

    • San Francisco Giants +140
    • A. Dodgers -160

In this example, the Giants are the underdog in the game signified by the + in front of the number and the Dodgers are the favorite signified by the – in front of the number. In this example, we will use $100 as the easy way to show the payout at MLB sports betting sites.

If you want to bet on the Giants you can wager $100 to win $140 and if you bet on the Dodgers you can wager $160 to win $100. As you can see the payout is better for the Giants, but they are the underdog in the game.

  • Totals – Over/Under

In totals, also called over/under, MLB betting you are betting over or under the total number of runs scored in a game by both teams. MLB sports betting sites will have a game and then have a total number of runs and you are wagering if you think the total number of runs scored will be over or under that amount for an even money payout.

Here is an example of MLB odds for a totals bet:

    • San Francisco Giants vs. L.A. Dodgers – 11 runs

You then simply have to bet if you think the total number of runs scored by the Giants and the Dodgers will be over or under 11 runs. If the Dodgers beat the Giants 8-5 the total number of runs scored is 13, so the over bet would be the winning one and the under bet would be the losing one.

In using the example above if the final score of the game is 6-5 that is 11 runs, which is the exact total posted by an MLB betting site. If that is the case the bet is a push and you will get your original wager back. That is why MLB sports betting sites will put a .5 after a number, for example, 11.5 runs. There cannot be a half a run scored, so if there is a .5 after a total for any game it takes the push out of the equation.

  • Run Line

While MLB betting does not have a point spread there is the run line bet. In a run line bet at MLB betting sites the favorite in the game will be giving 1.5 runs and the underdog in the game will be getting 1.5 runs and the moneyline MLB odds will change.

Let’s take a look at a run line bet using the example above.

    • San Francisco Giants +140
    • A. Dodgers -160

The above example is the moneyline bet and a run line bet for the game would look like this:

    • San Francisco Giants +1.5 runs -120
    • A. Dodgers +1.5 runs +140

As you and see the Giants are now the slight favorite in the game getting 1.5 runs and the Dodgers are the underdog giving 1.5 runs. In this game, if you want to bet on the Dodgers they have to win by two or more runs, giving 1.5 runs. Conversely, if you want to bet on the Giants they have to win or lose by a single run getting 1.5 runs. If the Dodgers beat the Giants 6-5 the Giants are the winning bet, as you add 1.5 runs to their total, so it would be Giants 6.5 Dodgers 6.

    San Francisco Giants A. Dodgers

  • MLB Futures Betting

MLB futures betting is betting on the future outcome of a bet and for MLB betting it is for the end of the season. A few examples of MLB futures betting is betting on who will win the World Series, who will win the American League Pennant, who will win the National League West, and what player will win the American League MVP or Cy Young award. MLB sportsbooks will have futures odds posted before the season begins, in moneyline form, and then continue to post MLB odds during the season, which will change depending on how the team or the player is performing.

Here is an example of MLB futures betting on what team will win the National League West:

    • A. Dodgers -130
    • Arizona Diamondbacks +160
    • Colorado Rockies +220
    • San Francisco Giants +330

In the above example, the Dodgers are the MLB betting favorites to win the division with the Giants as the big underdog. It was mentioned that the odds will change during the season and let’s say after the first half the Giants have been a surprise and have a one-game lead over the Dodgers at the All-Star break. Because of that MLB betting sites will change their odds, to +130, for example, since they have a better chance to win the division.

While MLB futures odds will change in-season the odds that you get at the time you make the bet are the odds you are locked in on.

  • MLB Betting Proposition Bets

Proposition betting is a bet that has nothing to do with the outcome of a game. The best MLB sportsbooks will post proposition bets, known as prop bets, for games and there are more of them available for bigger games mainly the playoffs and the World Series. There are team and player prop bets and some with even odds and some with inflated odds.

Here are a few examples of prop bets:

    • Will Clayton Kershaw have Over/Under 10 strikeouts?
    • Who will have more strikeouts Clayton Kershaw or Zack Greinke?
    • Will the Dodgers score any runs in the first inning?
    • Will the Giants have any players hit by a pitch?
    • Will there be over/under 4 home runs in the Giants vs. Dodgers game?
    • Will Mike Trout hit a home run in the game?

  • MLB Betting Parlays

In a parlay bet it is multiple bets in one. You have to bet on at least two games in a parlay bet and can bet many in one as well. You have to pick the winner of all of the games in the parlay bet for it to be a winner. So, if you made a 5-leg (game) parlay bet and you win the first four games but lose the last one the bet is still a loser. In parlay bets the more legs you bet the higher the payout will be, but conversely, the harder the bet will be to win.

For MLB betting on parlays, you can use the moneyline, totals, and run line or a mix of all three.

MLB Betting – Handicapping Games

Any time you handicap a game for MLB it increases your chance to win the bet. It can take some time to handicap games, but it can be advantageous for you to do so. Handicapping is getting as much information about a game as possible in looking at the matchup to see what team is more likely. A few things to look at for handicapping an MLB game can be recent form, key injuries, pitching match ups, bullpens, home-and-way records, head-to-head matchups, and if a team’s lineup has been hot or cold in the previous few games.

Pitching matchups is one of the best MLB handicap tools to look at. For example, if a pitcher has had a great season but was hit hard in his previous start and was lit up the last time he faced the team in the game you are looking to bet on his team may not be the best bet.

Here are a few examples of popular MLB betting strategies:

  • Betting against the public
The public tends to bet on the favorites more often and therefore the MLB betting sites will alter the odds to attempt to get even money bet on both teams. You can find value in short underdogs when betting against the public.
  • Betting on short road underdogs
A road underdog that is just a slight underdog can be a good bet since they are often the better team than the home one but slight dogs just because they are on the road.
  • Avoiding the Sweep
One MLB betting strategy is betting on a team that avoiding a sweep in the series. Teams tend to be more motivated in games to avoid a sweep and this is especially the case if they are at home in the series.
  • Betting on Streaking Teams

Other MLB betting strategies are more about the bets rather than the matchups such as the Martingale System and Fibonacci Sequence. For example, in the Martingale System, which can be used for any type of betting, you double your wager on a game after loss and keep the same betting amount after a win. The theory is that after a loss you can still come out ahead after a loss or losses by betting more on the next game. It is a risky strategy, as it can be costly if you hit a losing streak. Also for bet-centric MLB strategies, the bet has to at even or very close to even odds.
