Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event has been postponed until the fall.
Ty Stewart, the executive director of the World Series of Poker, said in a press release, “We are committed to running the World Series of Poker this year but need additional time to proceed on our traditional scale while prioritizing guest and staff well-being.”
It looked inevitable that the WSOP Main Event would be postponed, but there were fears that it might be canceled altogether. New Jersey poker players have not yet been given details on when the event will take place, except that it will happen sometime in the autumn.
Online poker thriving in New Jersey
WSOP.com has seen a surge in popularity in New Jersey this year. Last month’s Online Super Circuit Series saw major success with the events doubling, and some even tripling, their guaranteed prize pools. The same thing has been happening for the WSOP Online Spring Championship and PokerStars’ New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker (NJ SCOOP), which is scheduled to conclude next Monday.
Along with the postponement of the Main Event, the WSOP also announced that some official events will be taking place on WSOP.com.
“In the interim, official WSOP competitions are expected to be played online this summer, and we will soon announce details of an expanded series of tournaments to be played on WSOP.com and through partnership with international operators, which will allow players to chase WSOP glory from their homes,” the organizers said in a statement.
WSOP events draw big crowds, and many poker players online keep an eye out for all the chances to play for a coveted WSOP gold bracelet. On the 2020 WSOP schedule, there are 14 events where players can win a bracelet. It is not clear if those events will still take place, or if there will be a revised event schedule. However, if the online events go on as planned, you can be sure there will be many players from New Jersey as well as from Nevada and Delaware.
Big money to be won in WSOP Online Spring Championship
The WSOP.com Online Spring Championship has just passed the halfway point of the 100-event schedule. All of the events have met their guarantees, which is good news for poker players and the WSOP. The total guaranteed prize pool was set at $4 million, and that mark was surpassed after the 49th event.
There are some big events in the series coming up:
• April 25, Event #63, $30 buy-in NLH 30 for 30 – $30,000 guaranteed prize pool
• April 25, Event #66, $250 buy-in NLH Saturday Special – $30,000 guaranteed prize pool
